Sony announces new projectors at IFA

Sony VPL-VW520ES
While IFA doesn’t officially kick off until Sept. 4, things are already in full swing with a number of companies showing off their upcoming products already. Sony had announcements across multiple categories, but it certainly didn’t neglect its home theater products, showing a number of upcoming projectors.

Two of the models Sony announced today, the VPL-VW520ES (shown above) and VPL-VW320ESg, feature native 4K resolution with no artificial manipulation of pixels. Both feature new long-lasting lamps that offer up to 6,000 hours of operation. The VPL-VW520ES even supports High Dynamic Range (HDR) content through its HDMI input, with a 300,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio.

“These new 4K projectors from Sony demonstrate our commitment to the native 4K resolution and HDR imagery, which guarantees the most immersive cinematic experience,” Sony product manager Thomas Issa said. “Our projectors further support this through SXRD technology to achieve high-resolution images without the need to compromise between deep contrast and motion capabilities. We want our customers to enjoy true 4K, whether it is in a dedicated dark room or a living room.”

Sony also announced the new VPL-HW65ES, which trades HD resolution for the 4K in the above projectors, but also features the same long-lasting 6,000 hour lamp. The VPL-HW65ES, VPL-VW520ES, and VPL-VW320ESg all feature an RF 3D transmitter that offers strong signal quality and 3D synchronization stability.

A number of products from Sony’s Life Space UX line will also be on display at the show, including the new Portable Ultra Short Throw Projector. This 10cm cube projects an 20- to 50-inch image, and can be set up anywhere, from a table top to against a wall, allowing it to fit in spaces unsuited to full-size projectors.
